How to Use Your Cooler

How to Use the Nomad Insulin Cooling Cases

The Nomad Cooling Cases for Insulin & Medications are very easy to use.

1. Prepare the Biogel: For even distribution, shake the Biogel freeze pack up and down four or five times.

2. Then, simply place your Biogel freeze pack in the freezer for 6-8 hours before use. (there is no issue if you leave it in the freezer for more than 8 hours.)

3. Once you need to use it, submerge the freeze pack in luke-warm tap water for 120-180 seconds before placing it into the insulated cooling bottle. In the absence of luke-warm water, leave it outside for 15-20 minutes before use; however, the warm tap water method is more efficient throughout the year and at various seasonal temperatures. Following one of the procedures above will remove the ice layer (frost) from the surface of this cooling component, eliminating the risks of freezing your medicine when in direct contact.

4. Gently towel dry the Biogel and place your insulin or medicine inside the cooling case, along with the frozen pack.

5. Securely close the lid. It's that simple!

Frequently asked questions

How Long Does The Nomad Cooling Case Keep Insulin And Medications Refrigerated?

The Medium Nomad keeps insulin at fridge temperature (36–46°F / 2–8°C) for up to 30 hours at 86°F / 30°C ambient, and up to 26 hours at 104°F / 40°C.

The Big Nomad offers slightly longer performance — up to 33 hours at 86°F / 30°C.

Both sizes can also keep medications cool below 79°F / 26°C for up to 48–52 hours, making them reliable for multi-day trips.

Is The Nomad Safe To Use In Extreme Heat, Like On A Beach Or In A Hot Car?

Yes — the Nomad cooling case is specifically designed to perform in challenging outdoor conditions.

At 104°F / 40°C ambient temperature, the Medium Nomad still maintains safe fridge temperature for up to 26 hours, and the Big Nomad for up to 28 hours.

That said, like any passive insulin cooler, performance is best when kept out of direct sunlight and away from extreme heat sources.

How Many Insulin Pens Fit In The Nomad Cooling Case?

It depends on the size and your pen brand.

The Medium Nomad holds up to 3 pens of many common insulin brands (Lantus, NovoRapid, Toujeo, Actrapid) and up to 2 pens of wider formats (Tresiba, Levemir, Humalog).

The Big Nomad holds up to 7 pens of most standard formats and up to 6 pens of the wider ones.

Check the full compatibility list on the product page for your specific pen. If you have any doubt, contact our support team via chat for personalized advice.

Can I Use The Nomad Cooling Case For GLP-1 Injections Like Ozempic, Zepbound, Wegovy, And Mounjaro?

Yes. The Nomad medical cooling case is fully compatible with GLP-1 weight-loss and diabetes injections including Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound, Saxenda, Trulicity, and Victoza.

Always verify the specific fit using the size guide on the product page, as pen dimensions can vary by country. If you have any doubt about your medication's compatibility, do not hesitate to contact our support team via chat for personalized advice.

Is This Cooling Case Suitable For Other Medications?

Yes. The Nomad is compatible with a wide range of biologics and autoimmune medications, including Humira, Dupixent (200 mg and 300 mg), Enbrel, Cosentyx, Kevzara, Benlysta, Nucala, Fasenra, and many others.

Storage capacity varies by pen size — check the detailed compatibility list on the product page, or contact our support team via chat for personalized guidance.

What Is The Difference Between The Medium And Big Nomad Cooling Cases?

The main difference is storage capacity and internal dimensions.

The Medium Nomad (9.5 in tall, 2.5 in diameter) holds fewer pens and suits users carrying 1–3 injections daily.

The Big Nomad (8.9 in tall, 3.3 in diameter) offers nearly double the internal space and is better for longer trips or users with multiple medications. The Big Nomad also offers marginally longer refrigeration times.

What Is The Difference Between The Nomad And The Nomad Pro?

The Nomad Pro includes everything the Nomad offers, with one key upgrade: a built-in digital temperature display that shows the internal temperature in real time.

If peace of mind about your medication's exact temperature matters to you, the Nomad Pro is worth the upgrade. If you're comfortable with the proven Biogel system and prefer a simpler, cheaper option, the standard Nomad is an excellent choice.

The Nomad Pro also comes with a convenient carry bag, offering extra insulation and scratch-protection.

Is The Biogel Freeze Pack Safe For Medical Use?

The Biogel freeze pack included with our medical travel coolers uses a non-toxic natural gel with a freezing point of 36°F / 2°C — the same as the lower boundary of safe fridge temperature.

Unlike standard water-based ice packs (which freeze at 32°F / 0°C and can damage medication on contact), the Biogel physically cannot drop below that threshold, eliminating the risk of freezing your insulin or medication.

Ou freeze packs are reusable for unlimited freezing cycles.

Does The Nomad Cooling Case Require Electricity To Keep Medications Cool?

No — the Nomad requires no electricity, USB connection, or batteries whatsoever.

This cooling case works entirely through passive cooling using the included Biogel freeze pack, making it ideal for hiking, camping, beach days, or long-haul flights where power access is limited.

For USB-powered medical travel coolers, check our other coolers and mini fridges, like the Voyager, Voyager Mini, Pioneer, Pioneer PRO, or the Explorer.

Is There A Thermometer Or Temperature Display On The Nomad Cooling Case?

No. The Nomad does not include a built-in thermometer or temperature display.

If real-time temperature monitoring matters to you, check out the upgraded Nomad Pro, which features a digital temperature display.

The Nomad is designed for simplicity — its Biogel technology passively maintains a safe fridge temperature range without needing a screen to confirm it.

Is The Nomad Cooling Case TSA-Compliant For Air Travel?

Yes. The Nomad is TSA-compliant and can be carried through airport security in your hand luggage.

Always carry your medication alongside it to demonstrate the cooler is being used for medical purposes.

Can I Use The Nomad Cooling Case For Open, In-Use Insulin Kept At Room Temperature?

It depends on your insulin and medication's specific storage instructions.

The Nomad is engineered to maintain refrigerated temperatures (36–46°F / 2–8°C), which may be too cold for some types and brand of open, in-use insulin or medication that should be kept at room temperature.

For transporting open insulin pens at room temperature and protected from heat, we recommend the Rambler single-pen cooler, the new Rambler PRO, or the Chillers cool pouches instead.

How Do I Get Extra Cooling Time Beyond 33 Hours?

You can purchase additional Biogel freeze packs from 4AllFamily and swap them out once the first pack warms up.

Simply re-freeze the used pack while the second one is in service, giving you continuous uninterrupted refrigeration — ideal for extended trips or travel without reliable freezer access.

Is The Nomad Cooling Case Eligible For HSA/FSA Payment?

Yes. The Nomad can be purchased using HSA (Health Savings Account) or FSA (Flexible Spending Account) funds, letting you save up to 30% compared to paying with after-tax money.

The Flex payment option is available at checkout.

What Is The Return And Warranty Policy For The Nomad Cooling Case?

Not happy with your cooling case?

No worries — you have 30 days from delivery to request a return. Check our return policy page for the full details.

Your Nomad also comes with a 1-year warranty, and if you want extra peace of mind, you can add up to 3 more years of coverage at checkout for a small fee.
